Peeling Cacti in Oaxaca - Huatulco, Mexico. 2016
I'm going to go out on a limb and make the assumption that there isn't quite the skills gap in rural Mexico that we see here in the United States and in most of the developing world. Everywhere I went on Mexico, people were proud to use their hands in the work they do. What would seem like a menial job to us is how most of the world puts food on the table. The relationship people around the world have with their food is beautiful. Food is revered and precious, among water, God, and happiness.
I spent a couple hours speaking to Gloria (pictured) and she actually encouraged me to make her photograph, so long as she didn't have to look into the camera.
Gloria has arms that most guys would be envious of, no doubt from a life of raising children and doing such specific tasks with her hands.
She may not look it in the photograph, but when she did smile, it was as if the world melted away.
I am forever in pursuit of the photographs that define those moments in people's lives...
